Etsy fees in Canada: your real profit per order

A $30 sale does not leave you $30. Here are the fees Etsy lists for sellers in Canada, and a worked example you can copy.

The three basic fees

Etsy's Canada selling page says there are three basic selling fees: a listing fee, a transaction fee and a payment processing fee. There is also an advertising fee on sales that come from Offsite Ads.

  • Listing fee: US$0.20 per listing, shown by Etsy as about CA$0.28. A listing lasts four months or until it sells.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the price you display, plus what you charge for delivery and gift wrapping.
  • Payment processing: for a bank account in Canada, 3% + CA$0.25 on domestic orders and orders from the US, and 4% + CA$0.25 on other international orders.

Etsy says the processing fee is charged on the gross order amount, including delivery and tax. The listing fee is billed in US dollars, so the Canadian amount moves.

A worked example

This is our illustration with made-up costs. Fees are Etsy's listed rates. An item sells for CA$30 plus CA$6 shipping to a Canadian buyer. For simplicity, we leave tax on the fees out.

  • Listing fee: CA$0.28.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of CA$36 is CA$2.34.
  • Processing: 3% of CA$36 is CA$1.08, plus CA$0.25, which is CA$1.33.
  • Canada Regulatory Operating Fee: 0.5% of CA$36 is CA$0.18.
  • Etsy fees total: CA$4.13.

Now add your own costs. Say materials cost CA$8 and the postage label costs CA$6.

  • You took in: CA$36.00.
  • Minus Etsy fees: CA$4.13.
  • Minus materials: CA$8.00.
  • Minus postage: CA$6.00.
  • What is left: CA$17.87.

That is about half of the CA$36 the buyer paid, before packaging, your time, ads, tax and anything else.

Where the fee changes

  • The Canada Regulatory Operating Fee is 0.5% of the item price plus shipping, gift wrap and personalization, per Etsy’s help page. Check Etsy’s current fee page, as rates change.
  • On a listing with several units, Etsy's help page says you pay US$0.20 for each extra unit that sells, and the listing renews if stock is left.
  • Listings renew automatically at four months unless you choose manual. Each renewal is another listing fee.
  • If you refund an order, Etsy says it recalculates the processing fee and refunds other fees to your payment account. For some full refunds that Etsy covers, fees are not credited back.

The same order from abroad

If that same order came from a buyer outside Canada and the US, Etsy lists 4% + CA$0.25 for processing. That is 4% of CA$36, or CA$1.44, plus CA$0.25, which is CA$1.69. Your fees would be CA$4.49 and your profit CA$17.51 before any extra postage.

Where to see your fees

Etsy's help page says the fees show in your payment account. The listing fee shows as “listing”. Etsy converts listing fees from US dollars at the market rate.

Find your floor price

Work backwards. Add materials, packaging and postage. Add the fee percentages and flat amounts. Then add the profit you want. Check the result against your price, and re-do it when Etsy changes a fee.

What to track for each order

  1. The sale price and shipping you charged.
  2. Each Etsy fee line, from your payment account.
  3. The cost of materials and packaging.
  4. The postage you paid.
  5. Any refund and what came back.

Taxes are separate

Fees are a business expense, but your income and GST/HST are separate topics. Etsy also charges GST/HST, QST or PST on some seller fees, depending on your province and whether you are registered. It shows in your payment account. If your listing currency differs from your payment account currency, Etsy may add a 2.5% currency conversion fee. Read Etsy seller taxes in Canada: what to track and the GST/HST $30,000 guide.

Etsy can change its fees at any time, so check the pages in the source list before you set prices.
